Today’s Gospel concludes the discussion of Jesus as the Bread of Life. Not only the Jews, but Jesus’s own disciples, had great difficulty in accepting His call to eat his flesh and drink his blood. Jesus points out where the problem really lies. “It is the Spirit that gives life–the flesh is useless. The words I speak to you are spirit and life.”
To understand the real meaning of Jesus’s words comes from the gift–the grace of faith. “No-one can come to me unless it is granted him by the Father” Then many of his disciples left him, but, in the name of all of us, we hear Peter’s profound act of trust and commitment, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the message of eternal life.” Peter’s response needs to become ours; too. The way of Jesus is not just adherence to a religious sect. It is to see that the way Jesus proposes is the way for us to live.
Let us ask for the faith and strength to stay with Jesus, and experience the life that only He can give. Today we ask to see our world with the eyes of Jesus-and help others to do the same
